Richard Lynn Pilcher finished mowing his last yard, played his last round of golf and traveled his final journey home on August 2, 2018 in Granbury surrounded by his family and friends. He was 67.

Richard was born on August 5, 1950 in Gainesville, Texas to Maurice Lee Pilcher and Mildred Inez Suggs Pilcher. He was the third in the lineup of six and the first boy, so naturally he was in charge. He grew up in Fort Worth and Las Vegas, Nevada before graduating from Haltom High School in 1968.

He worked as a grocery manager for Buddie’s while in high school before becoming a chemist at General Portland Cement. He also followed in his father’s footsteps and worked as a stagehand at both the Tarrant County Convention Center and Will Rogers Coliseum spending many hours working the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo and Shrine Circus.

After a forced medical retirement in 1985, he moved to Granbury for a fresh start. In 1990, he opened a lawn service and continued mowing until the spring of this year when he officially retired. In June he and Sharon embarked on a four month journey in his little travel trailer and spent six weeks traveling through Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Glacier National Park and had arrived in the Pacific Northwest when he became ill. One of his most favorite places in this world was Yellowstone National Park. He always said, “you can’t see all of this beauty and nature and ever deny that there is a God. It’s just a miracle.”

Richard was preceded in death by his father in 1986; his mother is 2004; father-in-law Boyce Sims in 1996; mother-in-law Pat Sims in 2017; sisters Pat Pool and Sandy Bunkley, both in 2014; and wife Sue Pilcher in 1994.

He married Sharon Soladay Pope on January 11, 1997 in Granbury joining their four children into one family. Richard’s proudest accomplishments were his “grandjoys”. The oldest two graduated in May of this year and he took no greater glee than watching his eldest grandson Brayden win back to back state basketball championship titles in Lipan and having his granddaughter be named to Academic All State for soccer. He was always the loudest fan on the sidelines and made sure the officials knew “Poppy was watching them.”

Richard is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sharon Pilcher of Granbury; daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Sonny Roy of Granbury; Jimmie and Andrea Pope of Allen; Zach and Lindsay Pope of Dallas and Jared and Jennifer Pope of Dallas; grandjoys Brayden Jones, Kennedy Roy, Harman Pope, Porter Pope, Madeleine Pope, Tucker Pope, Riley Ann Pope and Dalton Pope; brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnnie and Kim Pilcher of Fort Worth, Randy and Suzanne Pilcher of Arkansas and Gary and Marsha Pilcher of Fort Worth; uncles and aunts, Alvin and Neta Suggs of Arlington and Tommy and Lucy of Bedford; brothers-in-law Don Pool of Meridian and Roger Bunkley of Lipan; sisters and brothers-in-law Linda Beth and Bob Powell of Gordon, Janis and Bob Blackwell of Vancouver, Washington and Joycelynn and Darrell Sims of Argyle; and a host of other nieces, nephews and extended family, friends and the entire membership of First United Methodist Church of Granbury.
