Esther Pearl Umphress, 85, of Granbury, Texas passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018.  Service: 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018, Granbury First United Methodist Church. Visitation:  6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2018, Wiley Funeral Home, Granbury.

Esther was born on June 22, 1932 in West Columbia, Texas to Robert and Hester Gray.  She graduated from West Columbia High School and remained close to the friends in her graduating class of ‘49.

Esther was from a large, close and loving family. She was “Mom” to her five children – Troy, Joy, Jay, Ray and Gay and “Grandma” to most everyone that knew her. She had a lifelong devotion to helping others.  In 2012 Esther was awarded The Opal Durant Woman of the Year Award. She started volunteering when her kids were young and volunteered up until a few years ago. She would sew clothes, uniforms and costumes and also coach her daughters’ cheerleading teams. She was the PTA room mom many, many times and Treasurer of the L.D. Bell Booster Club. She was known to be the fun, sweet mom in the neighborhood.  After her marriage to Kennith they moved to Granbury where Esther helped at the voting polls and also one day a week for 30 years answered the telephone at the Hood County Senior Center. She enjoyed her Ladies Club with the Agrilife Extension Services and was famous for bringing her chocolate chip cookies to any event. She was an amazing cook. Her family has the best of memories gathering together for holiday meals at “Grandma and Papaw’s” Granbury farm. She will be missed by many.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband of 27 years, “Jack” Bunch, with whom she raised and inspired her five children, eight siblings (Esther was 9th of 10) and son-in-law Gary Good.

Survivors:  husband of 39 years, Kennith Umphress; children: Troy Bunch Jr and wife Gayle, Joy Esther Bunch Good and husband Tony Shaw, Jay Bunch and wife Jennifer, Ray Bunch and wife Debbie, Gay Bunch-Hulse and husband Andrew, also Juanita Umphress Smith and husband John and Aletha Umphress Rogers and husband Roy “Trigger”; 22 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; sibling:  younger sister Shirley Gray Sanders and husband Durwood; and lots of nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved very much.
