Barbara Wright Reed, entered her heavenly home on January 13, 2020. She will always be remembered as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend to all that that knew her.
Barbara was born in Lampasas, Texas on June 9, 1941 to William Earl Wright and Linnie Eldie Williams Wright. She was the youngest of their four daughters. She was a 1959 graduate of Killeen High School.
Enrolled in Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Barbara majored in history and secondary education and business. She met a football player, Ray Reed, and they married between their sophomore and junior years. After graduation, Barbara and Ray moved to Athens, and their daughter Janna was born there. Price, Texas was the next stop of Barbara’s teaching career where she taught business classes at Carlisle High School.
In 1967, they moved to Wharton, Texas where son Wes was born. Barbara continued to teach for 27 more years at Wharton High School. She taught history, business classes and Vocational Office Education on Apple computers. Barbara was a delight to work with. Her sense of humor, infectious giggle, and willingness to help her fellow educators was always appreciated. Loved by her pupils, she touched many lives and had a positive impact on many, many students.
Barbara was always active in her church, teaching Sunday School to youth and adult classes, participating in the mission work of Women’s Missionary Union. Vacation Bible School was a part of her summer activities.
Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was fortunate to count Barbara as a member. She was inducted into the Alpha Iota chapter in Wharton and transferred her membership to Lambda Pi in Granbury. In Alpha Iota, she was president and a recipient of the chapter achievement award.
When the family relocated to Ray’s family farm in Granbury, Barbara continued with her church and DKG activities. At First Baptist Church in Granbury, she was a real “cut up”, cutting fabric for the Prayers and Squares quilting ministry at FBC.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 58 years, Gordon Ray Reed; daughter Janna Reed Renfro and her husband Craig of Carrollton; son Wes Reed and wife Shanon of Waurika, Oklahoma; grandchildren Kayleigh Renfro, Cullen Renfro, Katelynn Reed and Brooklynn Reed; and a host of in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Memorials may be made to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation at pkdcure.org; First Baptist Church of Granbury, or Alpha State Texas Educational Foundation (ASTEF) at astef.org.
